ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts of the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapter of the book. The book provides a broad overview of on Italian national identity and immigration, considering the two strands of discussion separately as well as following their intersecting trajectories. The aim of these debates investigation was to assess what model of integration, if any, Italy is putting forward in reacting to the new challenges immigration poses to the definition of citizenship and antagonistic interpretations of belonging. The choice of analysing the subject within the theoretical framework of discourse analysis, employed as an interpretative tool examines Italian political history, has contributed to bringing to light the key concepts around which the debates revolve as well as the interactions between the different political actors participating in the discussion, their political strategies, the internal tensions and disagreements within each group, the evolution of these different interpretations of citizenship and, finally, their overall impact on state policy making.
