Pre-service Teacher Training book
This chapter covers well recognized but very different forms of pre-service education and training (PRESET). It begins with the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) and then goes onto BA and MA programmes. Thousands of people each year take some kind of certificate course; indeed, for many, a CELTA or equivalent is the only professional qualification attained. In the UK most people take a 'CELTA' type course validated by one of two UK-based examination bodies; Cambridge ESOL validates the 'Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults' and Trinity College, London validates the 'Certificate in TESOL'. The chapter focuses on the most important elements: teaching practice (TP) and post-observation conferences (POCs). The teacher learner (TL) typically undertakes six hours of supervised teaching practice in total. TP has a number of elements but the TL usually has opportunities to reflect-on-action. The chapter ends by considering contexts that offer alternative forms of training for novice teachers.
