ABSTRACT

Film music is another weapon in the armoury of the director. The score should inevitably have a strong theme, which reflects the mood of the film either in a leading character or the action of the film. There are several ways to provide music for a film. The classic way is to record an orchestral score for the film. This requires a considerable budget to pay for the musicians, engineers, studio and other staff to orchestrate, arrange and conduct the music. Score is different from a standard musical composition in that music written for a film rarely stands on its own. Score is part of the story and relates to specific characters and events, so listening to just the music is usually less than satisfactory. Some directors want music whenever there is no dialogue, but that may not always be the best choice. If a scene is intense, it may be good to take a breath before using music.
