ABSTRACT

The history of Foley began with a man named Jack Foley who worked at Universal Studios in Hollywood. The main reason for creating Foley sound effects is to augment the production soundtrack and thereby to create a more realistic soundscape. The more time and effort put into the Foley sounds the greater the production value for the film. The Foley artists watch a screen or monitor that displays the scene to which they will perform the Foley moves. The Foley artist performs the "naturally occurring" sound elements while the SFX editor adds the sound effects that are beyond what can be created in a Foley session. The pits are built into the floor of the Foley stage. Some Foley artists and mixers use three or more microphones for recording Foley. The ideal Foley stage has the ability to be very dead or to be more lively just by adding and arranging sound-absorbing material or sound reflective material.
