Phonology and orthography

While North Sámi has a standard orthography, the underlying phonology varies according to dialect area. The following presentation is based on the Western dialect. A more thorough treatment of the North Sámi phonology is beyond the scope of this book. For a more detailed analysis see Pekka Sammallahti’s (1998) The Saami Languages: An Introduction, listed in the Suggested Resources section at the end of the volume.
