ABSTRACT

Among the peninsular river basins of India, the Godavari River Basin (GRB) is the largest in the northern half of the Indian peninsula. It has a total catchment area of 312,812 sq. km, which is about 10 per cent of the total geographical area of India. It originates in the Western Ghats at an elevation of about 1,067 m and flows for a length of 1,465 km from its origin (Nasik) before it enters the sea. It is a trans-boundary river (see Map 3.1), flowing through six states, namely, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Karnataka.
