ABSTRACT

Philosophy deals with fundamental concepts, and with important questions that can be posed by means of them. Almost every beginner in Philosophy has had at least some exposure to Mathematics and various sub-disciplines in Science. Philosophy differs by posing questions that are essentially controversial. These questions are important and of long standing; yet they continue to invite speculative answers, or even answers backed by arguments, that vary widely across the spectrum. The purpose of a philosophical education is to enable one to find reasons to commit oneself one way or another in response to important philosophical questions. The best way to prevent philosophical differences from developing into hostile personal conflicts is to de-personalize the issues. The beginner in Philosophy does not need much by way of preparation. It usually suffices to have a healthy respect for intellectual pursuits of all kinds.
