ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the use of the outdoor classroom as a vehicle for enhancing teaching and learning in science. Embedding school trips across the curriculum has reached new heights in terms of the political agenda as government and educationalists recognise how they can enrich pupils' learning experience, boost academic achievement and make learning fun. The idea of 'learning outside the classroom' in itself is nothing new, indeed a Council for Learning Outside the Classroom (CLOtC) was established in 2008 in response to the 2006 manifesto on LOtC. There exists a wealth of organisations across the UK providing experiences and activities for learning science. A good starting point is the National STEM Centre based in York. In July 2004 the government released its 'Science and Innovation Investment Framework 2004–2014' which set out a long-term strategy to secure and sustain a supply of scientists, engineers, technologists and mathematicians (STEM) to support the science base.
