ABSTRACT

Some situations, simply because of the subject, contain an audience expectation. It’s the ball-inthe-net principle again. e viewer expects to see the ball go into the net, and any moment short of that is likely to disappoint. Not all photographers are comfortable with this, because it seems like an external measure of success or failure. If you don’t get it, you missed. In many ways, independently discovered moments, even something as small as the silhouette of the man walking home his cattle on page , are easier to deal with, because they don’t have the pressure of the audience. If a moment like the girl on the bench on page  didn’t come off, no one else would be any the wiser.
