ABSTRACT

A diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder introduces a strong story line for individuals and their families. Each family approaches this crossroad in their unfolding narrative of family life in a unique, diverse, and multilayered way. There are as many ways to incorporate the autism narrative into the ongoing family story as can be imagined. Many times the search for the singular family experience through reading information about the autism spectrum on the Internet adds to the family narrative of otherness or isolation. Therapy practices can be useful in guiding individual families through the process of constructing their singular autism spectrum story. The narrative therapy process moves the family away from the narrative of limitations in each of the four key areas in a transformative and empowering way. As parents tell their story, the narrative therapy process provides the clinician with opportunities to help parents notice areas of competency and to introduce empowering language.
