ABSTRACT

The Packard Foundation Headquarters, centrally located in Los Altos, California, was built on a 1.5 acre, previously developed site. When the Packard Foundation was looking for a place to construct a new headquarters building near downtown Los Altos, one of their goals was to consolidate several office locations under one roof. The new development should in many ways come to reflect the Foundation's mission: conserving resources, protecting the planet and improving people's lives. “For decades, the Foundation has focused on conserving and preserving the Earth's ecosystems by promoting renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions, and through energy efficiency”. A constructed wetlands area at the southern end of the site is part of a comprehensive storm management plan. Considering the size and shape of the lot, an initial design approach might have been to place one long building centered on the site, parallel to 2nd Street.
