ABSTRACT
This is not just a question of speculative or conceptual interest. Egalitarianism, after all, is a matter of serious debate in public political discourse in the domestic context. Some philosophers believe that economic inequality between citizens in a society can be a problem of justice for reasons besides that of its potential causal connection to poverty. Is economic inequality in the global context a morally salient topic as well? No doubt, the more urgent moral problem remains that of extreme global poverty, but this does not mean that the question of economic inequality is of no practical importance. For one thing, when we identify what justice requires beyond the obvious, we can better guard against potential moral blind spots and complacencies.
