ABSTRACT

The German Armistice was signed, they was bedridden in their home at Limpsfield, Surrey, stricken down by that deadly type of influenza that was sweeping over the world, and which is said to have caused more deaths than the war itself. On November 12th the author received, in absentia, as they were not fit to travel, an honorary LLD from Birmingham University, of which Lord Robert Cecil was Chancellor. It is rare that a peace such as Burke demanded can be achieved in the atmosphere of bitterness, hate, revenge and acute nationalism that follows a great war, especially when a large number of nations are concerned in the peace making. During World War the author there had never been anything approaching the unconditional surrender of World War II.
