ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the story of the Paris Peace Conference few episodes are more important to the history of the British Empire than the series of meetings of the Council of Ten. At the outset Lloyd George secured the unanimous agreement of all present to the principle that the colonies should not restored to Germany. After that he outlined the various methods by colonies could be dealt with, viz., internationalization or control by the League of Nations, but he thought it was generally agreed that these territories could not deal with internationally; trusteeship on behalf of the League as mandatory; frank annexation. The summary of position of the territories by stating that he would like the Conference to treat the territories enumerated as part of the Dominions which had captured them rather than as areas administered under the control of an organization established in Europe which might find it difficult to contribute even the smallest financial assistance to their administration.
