ABSTRACT

This book presents an historical overview of the political and social changes that have occurred in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). National identity is composed of many aspects but language is considered 'an essential part of identity' and in BiH the teaching of language has become contentious. The book illustrates the physical conditions of some schools in BiH and how physical segregation and the use of 'dual schools' has contributed to young people developing 'discriminatory attitudes that lead them to believe that such intolerance represents socially acceptable behaviour'. It describes how each major period of transition was accompanied by educational reform as new authorities asserted their control. Communist ideology required the subordination of the population and complete control by central government, including control of education. The book shows how, over the centuries, BiH has been subject to governorship by different authorities, each of which had an impact on educational provision.
