ABSTRACT
This chapter shows how economic development in India's National Capital Region (NCR) has combined ‘Mumbai-type’ and ‘Bangalore-type’ informalisation. New Delhi, like Mumbai, experienced a major decline in organised sector employment during the neoliberal era. But wage labour in large firms rapidly expanded in industrial zones like Faridabad and Gurgaon. This chapter also shows how this expansion has incorporated rising waged employment in informal enterprises and the implementation of informal labour practices across the garments, electronics and automotive firms that dominate industry in the region. These practices have been used to systematically lower labour costs and undermine trade union rights.
