ABSTRACT

Junge et al. (1993), in an important and radical essay, queried the fundamental role of the art therapist in relation to maintaining the status quo. A rhetorical question was posited: are we as art therapists ‘helping people adjust to a destructive society’ within a ‘fatally injured mental health system?’ (p. 150). What are the implications for art therapy, if the answer is yes? The essay went on to challenge the dichotomy between the patient with a psychopathology and the expert healer; indeed, mutuality is emphasised and mutual recovery advocated.
