ABSTRACT

Amplification This is a technique derived from Carl G. Jung in which the mood tone or symbolic content of a picture is entered into in an imaginative way. For example, the therapist (looking at a picture of a boat at sea) might ask how it feels in the boat, or where the boat is going, or even whether the boat has a voice! Originally, the term referred to the symbolic quality of dreams: ‘Compared to free association, amplification is a more narrowly defined, more controlled and more focused type of association where one attempts to search for analogies that would expand upon the symbol in question’ (Laine 2007, p. 129).
