ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about the myth regarding love that invades our consciousness daily. These myths come from the media, friends, families, and greater culture. The challenge as clinicians is to dispel these myths in a way that encourages couples to create the best possible marriages. The chapter explains two helpful concepts about love in romantic relationships such as showing love and accepting love. For any challenges couples face dealing with love, the best course of action is guiding your clients in a conversation about their fears, expectations, and personal responsibilities. This chapter talks about the important goal in pre-marital counseling for clinicians that is to help set realistic expectations for newly-weds about what love looks like over time. In pre-marital counseling, clinicians are responsible for teaching clients a very important habit, how to actively participate in love, accept the love they are given, and create a love that can grow over time.
