ABSTRACT

As Director, the author published the book British Food Control in 1929 and an enlarged edition of Unemployment: A Problem of Industry a year later. Two things have to be admitted in defence of Sidney's forecast. First, the author did write quite a lot of booklets, pamphlets, articles and addresses; bound as Varia they form two stout volumes on his shelves today. Second, his difficulty in getting books written was not due solely to his work as Director. The author was glad to resurrect the letters, with their apparently justified confidence that, in the intervals of settling difficulties at the School of Economics and sitting on a Royal Commission. Till the moment when the author became Director, he had been engaged as a Civil Servant for ten years on a great variety of work and had gained experience which others than myself might think valuable. The social life of the 1920's was very full, even for economists.
