ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to take a fresh look at how inter-generic portrayal of character is employed in the four speeches of Aeschines and Demosthenes that are under examination in this book. In this regard, it should be noted that the scope of this enquiry is not to attempt to arrive at an all-encompassing understanding of the interplay between genre and ēthopoiia. Rather, the Performance Studies approach adopted in this work is used to examine how ēthopoiia might have influenced the audience, eliciting emotion and both verbal and non-verbal reaction, and creating a certain disposition towards Aeschines and Demosthenes, which would be eventually reflected in voting behaviour.
