ABSTRACT

The experiment of the new school has sometimes had quite unforeseen results. Even persons who are otherwise in favour of die experiment quite readily express their uneasiness in respect of one particular point. But the social environment would then have to inspire men with an authentic ideal. It does secrete myths and it proposes to the individual an end in conformity with the ideology of these myths. But before this end could be indisputable one would have to extend the sociological meta-physic to the point of denying any criterion but the social. The end is worth what the myth from which it proceeds is worth. If the myth proposed by society is excellent, education will not be going outside its province in trying to embody it in the individual; and all will be as it should be. This is what education is up against. This is where its power of correcting the environment meets with its unforeseen and obstinate limitation.
