ABSTRACT

Technique, which has modified the setting of our life, is an application of the physical sciences. It ignores the physiological sciences, the sciences of mankind, which are only beginning to formulate their laws, laws less conspicuous, more variable, but no less ineluctable than those of inert matter, laws for which one must have regard, or perish. Not only does technique make Nature accessible, but it also transforms it. Now, the power of transforming Nature, it is in the hands of unqualified persons, can inevitably be the power of defacing its beauty. Nature is no longer a being or a family of beings; it becomes an object, a mere obstacle to be overcome. The actual protectors of Nature play, perhaps, as regards the majority of human beings, the function of advanced sentinels, scouts, antennae. Modern humanity is dazzled by technique, it can see nothing else, this is why it is spoiling everything.
