ABSTRACT

While it is hoped that students will experience high-quality Physical Education throughout their school careers, this is not always the case. This chapter is designed to help teachers and coaches to introduce Cooperative Learning to older students who may have little or no experience of learning together in school. As with all the chapters it draws on real-world examples and shows – across multiple activity areas – how different structures and approaches to teaching through Cooperative Learning can be used. It examines the factors in schools that might help or hinder the use of innovative pedagogical approaches and shows how teachers and coaches might introduce the five key elements of Cooperative Learning to their classrooms. It provides sample lessons that focus on the different elements and Cooperative Learning Structures and demonstrates how they can be used in different settings. Specific tasks are presented that guide teachers and coaches to encourage students to be independent enquirers, creative thinkers, reflective learners, team workers, self-managers, and participants who contribute to the completion of the task.
