ABSTRACT
Nowhere has the power and destructiveness of modern discourse been more evident than in race relations. As early as the 15th and 16th centuries, geographers began to comment on the variability of the human groups that they encountered as they traveled. What they wrote about dierences was from the start entangled with the geopolitical purposes of their voyages-what European travelers wanted to do in distant lands and with foreign people.
