ABSTRACT
CHAPTER OVERVIEW This chapter will outline a brief history of social policy for children and families in
England, and then turn to the rise of the rights, inclusion and equality agendas,
both nationally and internationally. It will address the following questions:
How and why did legislation for children and families develop in England? What are the key aspects of social policy and legislation that underpin the
work of contemporary Early Years Graduate Practitioners (EYGPs) and Early
Years Teachers (EYTs) in England, and how can they keep up with ongoing
changes?
