ABSTRACT
CHAPTER OVERVIEW This chapter will outline some of the principal contemporary international debates
relating to the provision of care for young children. The emphasis will not be upon
providing readers with a set of ‘answers’, but upon encouraging them to engage
with the issues and to come to their own considered position. It is very possible
that you will decide that there are no conclusive answers to some of the debates
identified. The chapter will address the following questions:
How do we provide education and care for young children in contemporary societies?
