ABSTRACT

A child's internal rulebook is developed early, along with their template of how to build and manage relationships. The family models ways of managing feelings that provides children with experiences that they bring to school and use in their daily life. If a child's basic needs for food, appropriate clothing and sufficient sleep are not being met they are disadvantaged before they have entered the school building to start their day. Children develop an internal belief system about themselves by the messages they receive from other people. When a child receives attention for negative behaviour, rather than positive, they may view themselves as negative. School staff can play a vital role in helping children learn to understand and express their feelings and therefore develop self-regulation. Parents will bring their own experiences of schooling and their attitude towards education and learning with them in to school.
