ABSTRACT

Children need to have positive experiences of separating from their main career to be able to manage the school day and relationships that occur within the school setting with both adults and children. It is a challenge to encourage children to develop and implement the school's relationship system in a way that is not demonising or criticising the child's experience within their family. The relational patterns that children are exposed to are internalised and may become a reality in school. Children develop their own internal guide to making friends and engaging in relationships with adults in school and this may manifest in their behaviour towards other people. The group work programmes provide an opportunity for children to receive additional support with their social and emotional development and enables them to develop the necessary skills to manage relationships more successfully.
