ABSTRACT

Colloquial Norwegian provides a step-by-step course in Norwegian as it is written and spoken today. Combining a user-friendly approach with a thorough treatment of the language, it equips learners with the essential skills needed to communicate confidently and effectively in Norwegian in a broad range of situations. The verb system in Norwegian is relatively simple, because the verb forms are the same for any subject, regardless of number or gender. The present tense is used to express current activities, habitual actions or general statements. Norwegian does not distinguish between the present simple tense and the present progressive tense. Many Norwegians live together without being married. Some get married after a few years, or when they have children. On average, 40-45" of the marriages end up in divorce. Modal auxiliaries express modes or conditions. In Norwegian, they are normally used in combination with the infinitive to indicate whether something is planned, desired, hypothetical, permitted, recommended.
