ABSTRACT
This conclusion presents an overview of closing thoughts on key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book reflects on both the challenges and reality of racism and how the political focus on social mobility alone to address educational disadvantage will leave untouched the issues presented. It demonstrates how Black middle-class families' efforts have been thwarted by unsupportive school staff. Academic capital is in fact the guaranteed product of the combined effects of cultural transmission by the family and cultural transmission by the school. Qualitative research in education is extremely popular but also frequently criticised. The Black middle-class parent's experiences, hopes and fears that documented in this book, signal a further dimension to this issue. The majority of our respondents view racism as a powerful presence in their lives and one that, although uncomfortable, they must find ways to address as they steer their children through schooling and into adulthood.
