ABSTRACT

A hyphen can be used to replace ‘to’ in phrases such as ‘during the period October-December 2009, but not in ‘from . . . to’ or ‘between . . . and . . .’ expressions. For example, write:

. . . from October 2014 to July 2015

And:

. . . between October and December 2014 (not between October-December 2014)

The general rule is that all numbers ten and below should be spelt and numbers 11 and above should be put in numerals. However, there are certain exceptions to this:

• If numbers recur through the text or are being used for calculations, then numerals should be used.
