ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at some of the recent research into this area. It focuses on the difference between child perspectives and children's perspectives. John Bowlby was influenced by the earlier work of Lorenz who paid attention to the imitative behaviour of young ducklings towards their mother. Colwyn Trevarthen focuses on communication and he is eager that those involved with young children should learn to take into account the perspective of the child. Rosemary Roberts coined the term 'companionable learning' to refer to the intersubjectivity where the child and more expert other are engaged in an equal and reciprocal dialogue. Margaret Donaldson stated: Human sense is the understanding of how to live in the physical worlds that children. It summarises how important that the things one offer to babies and toddlers should be rooted in real and significant lives.
