ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the milieu that scholars enact online with respect to knowledge creation and dissemination, and describe how academics use networks for scholarship. Reminiscent of peer-to-peer networks for music sharing, scholars have sought the assistance of broader networks of individuals and have used Pirate University. In the cases where scholars use social media for knowledge creation and dissemination purposes, people observe a diverse range of practices to support such goals. One aspect of knowledge creation and dissemination in which crowd sourcing activities have been conducted that makes for an interesting phenomenon is the sharing of scholarly papers. The activities are important because they suggest that individuals are willing and able to circumvent and defy restrictions to the sharing of knowledge and research. While politicians, actors, and artists have used this platform, a number of scholars have also initiated threads and have sought to share their knowledge with this community.
