The timber is inherently different from other modern construction materials, and it would be inappropriate and potentially dangerous to treat it like concrete or steel. A detailed understanding of wood's behavior can put the material to its best use. Via Cenni is a series of multi-family residential towers, consisting of four nine-story cross laminated timber (CLT) buildings, linked together by four two-story CLT buildings in a seismically active region of Italy. Each tower in it has one central CLT vertical circulation core from which units are accessed. Modern timber buildings require a deep integration of architecture, engineering, manufacturing, construction, and building code jurisdiction. The future of timber design rests with incorporating it intelligently and in combination with other wood and non-wood materials. The sharing of information and methods of design and construction are vital to the rapid advancement of the art and science of building.
