ABSTRACT
When Europeans arrived in North America they found a country with vast forests. Where wood was already being replaced by other materials in Europe, the rich timber resources of North America were able to keep the tradition of wood building alive and strong for at least a century longer than in many other parts of the world. 1 The imported culture of building with wood that began with the first settlements along the eastern seaboard persists today.
