ABSTRACT
In England and Scandinavia, wood was the building material of choice from the earliest times in what is now Germany. The Germany is considered as one of the key wood countries in Europe for its production capacity and foreign trade in wood and wood-based products. The Tom Kaden + Partner Architekten was interested in projects that can offer a mixed structure of users in a system called Baugruppen, or co-housing in English. The house projects like the the woodcube, completed in Hamburg as part of the citys' international architecture exhibition 2013, indicate a growing interest in mass timber design in the country. The use of prefabricated wood elements offers big advantages which Schankula Architekten believe will ultimately lead to wood as a standard building material for schools and urban housing. The wood construction represents an important contribution to the conservation of resources and carbon neutrality.
