ABSTRACT

Knowledge of different therapeutic approaches is valuable, as will be an engagement with contemporary positive psychology techniques. Positive psychology has built up an impressive body of knowledge concerning various factors such as curiosity, gratitude, forgiveness, and so on, showing how they are generally adaptive mechanisms for a happier life. Person-activity fit is important, and we should not assume that any of the commonly researched variables in positive psychology, such as hope, optimism, forgiveness and so on, will always be helpful. As such positive therapy requires a great ability to listen and the artistry to go with the flow of the client and for the therapist to bring themselves, their knowledge and skills to the service of the client. Many therapists will recognize the similarity with this view and that of the notion of process direction. The person-centred approach refers to a philosophical approach to human relationships not a set of techniques.
