ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the concept of innovation and how an Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) innovation typology can be established to help in discovering new ways of doing things differently. It discusses the growth of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), with evaluation of the threats and opportunities created by the rapidly moving digital world. The chapter explains what is meant by the term innovation and the concept of an innovation typology and how it can be applied to OSH. It explores the importance of adopting a strategic approach to OSH change management and discusses the growth of ICT and its implications for OSH management and practice. The chapter also explores the different types of social media and the benefits and limitations for OSH practitioners. The workplace has seen a huge growth in the use of ICT, rapid changes in the type of technology used, including computer networks, electronic data interchange and the internet.
