ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines data analytics and decision making, which may appear somewhat unusual content for the theme of being distinctive. However, the effective use of statistics can help bring data to life and ensure that Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) messages are communicated in a compelling fashion. The chapter deals with uncertainty and knows how to deal with it and describes analytical descriptive, summary and inferential statistical tools and their purpose and limitations. It examines different ways to present OSH data in consideration of the target audience and explains how to incorporate OSH data into management reports. The chapter discusses the contribution of luck in OSH outcomes and whether it is possible to create an environment that increases the propensity for luck. Understanding the risk involved with the support of data and other quantitative information can be crucial to clarify the available options when making decisions.
