ABSTRACT

Islamism has often been studied by focusing on the political domain, narrowly defined. However, it is essential to include in the analysis also the economic and cultural domains. In particular, to understand processes of Islamisation, it is essential to take into account transformations of the political economy. The development of Islamist movements since the 1970s can be better comprehended in relation to the crisis of the Arab state. In the last decades, also globalisation also had a powerful impact on the development of Islamist movements.
