ABSTRACT

The historical process of re-Islamisation of Jordanian society in the last decades need to be studied in relation to political and economic transformations, which had a powerful impact in the social construction of contemporary Islamic identities in Jordan. In this process, the Muslim Brotherhood of Jordan played a remarkable role, also through its powerful and pervasive network of Islamic social institutions. Concepts such as hegemony and counter-hegemony are particularly useful to conceptualise the shifting relationships between the Islamist movement and the monarchy.
