ABSTRACT

This chapter has examined moments in which the film Another Year's main character, Mary, is at the crossroads of realizing and accepting her lost past as well as the positive state of those around her contrasted with her own personal failures and loneliness. Steiner examines the two stages of optimal containment in the psychoanalytic process. Modern Kleinian Therapy considers it vital to be aware of and engaged with the distinct anti-life and anti-growth or change force that seems to have an upper hand in some patients. It premiered at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award as best original screenplay. Steiner notes that, eventually, author's hope the patient can face the grief, loss, and trauma of no. having the analyst provide that containment any longer and in its place the patient becomes their own container, hopefully providing the same sorts of understanding, limits, and forgiveness.
