ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides an understanding of the research-based approach to early education of Reggio Emilia. It describes the context in which the philosophy and pedagogy of the early childhood institutions of Reggio Emilia developed. There is a focus on the life and influence of Loris Malaguzzi, the pedagogical founder of the Reggio Approach. The municipal infant-toddler centres and preschools fit into the overall organisation of early childhood services in the city of Reggio Emilia. The book focuses on the centrality of research in the ongoing educational experience in Reggio and develops the theme of the confident, competent child. The way in which documentation is used to visualise children's learning on a day-to-day basis is described. The book summarises the key messages which can be gained from understanding the work of the preschools and infant-toddler centres of Reggio Emilia.
