ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, and provides some unique cultural information and terminology that will be useful in a clinician's work with individuals, relationships, and families within it. The chapter presents a list of terms covering the concepts of LGBT commmunity. The term 'sexual minorities' refers to individuals who are not heterosexual and includes a wide range of individuals whose attractions vary greatly. The author Lisa Diamond addresses the phenomenon of sexual fluidity in women, and believes that for some females, sexuality is not rigidly heterosexual or homosexual, but fluidly changing throughout their lives. Adult individuals who identify as transgender and are seeking some form of medical/legal transition, often call counselors looking simply for a letter of support for the purpose of medical or legal transition rather than psychotherapy. Society's views on the LGBT community have certainly come a long way, and recently things have been changing quite rapidly.
