ABSTRACT

It cannot have escaped our notice that mobile technologies have become mainstream. While early tablet computers, mobile phones and ebook readers have been around for at least ten years, it is the advent of three specific market-changing mobile devices of those types that have fuelled mobile technology use through to what is known as the tipping point. That is where take-up and market saturation reaches the point where the technology becomes mainstream and normal rather than being something for niche users or early adopters. These three devices are the iPhone, the iPad and the Kindle. Lecturers and professors utilise this by pre-releasing lecture slide shows with embedded links specifically for the tablet user. Each year, bring your own technology (BYOT) enthusiasts within educational institutions are communicating with parents and students to suggest how technology purchases can further help the education of students during their time in college or university.
