ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the case study of the economic and demographic changes in Washington, DC. Specifically, it focuses on the Columbia Heights, Logan Circle, and Shaw neighborhoods of Washington, DC. The chapter documents how the city has experienced significant growth of jobs and redevelopment over the past twenty years, leading to drastic demographic shifts, a rise in housing prices, and an increase in new investments in infrastructure and local amenities such as restaurants, parks, and bicycle lanes. In recent years, Organizing Neighborhood Equity DC (ONE DC) has established itself as an organization deeply rooted in community organizing and has focused its work around several important issues related to mitigating the effects of gentrification and neighborhood change. Still, ONE DC's focus on equitable economic development principles and strategies combined with grassroots community organizing and base building helped it score the first Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) in Washington, DC and strengthen its First Source Law.
