      ABSTRACT

This chapter comprises an accessible reference grammar and related exercises. Grammar points are followed by examples and exercises which allow students to reinforce and consolidate their learning. Clearly presented and user-friendly, Basic Portuguese provides readers with a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of Portuguese grammar. The subject, the direct object and the indirect object can be replaced with pronouns, namely a subject pronoun, a direct object pronoun and an indirect object pronoun. The variant forms apply to the third person direct object pronouns -o, -a, -os and -as, depending on specific verb conjugations. The chapter ends with some exercise related to rewrite the sentences by replacing the direct object with the appropriate direct object pronoun; complete the narrative with the verb and pronoun units; complete the sentences by replacing the direct object with the appropriate direct object pronoun and placing it in the correct position: before or after the verb.
