      ABSTRACT

The imperfect tense in Portuguese is used in a variety of situations in the past. Imperfect tense is used to describe past actions of a certain duration. It is used to describe frequent or habitual actions in the past, that is what used to happen. It is used to describe simultaneous actions. It can also be used for polite requests, meaning 'would' or 'could'. Regular verbs are conjugated as follows in the imperfect tense. Some typically irregular verbs follow a regular conjugation pattern in the imperfect tense. They are: dar, dizer, fazer, ir, saber, trazer, and ver. The verb ir is used as auxiliary to other verbs. In the past, the verb ir plus the infinitive of the main verb is used to describe actions that were going to happen. In this case, the auxiliary verb ir is conjugated in the imperfect tense and it is followed by the main verb in the infinitive.
