ABSTRACT

Beginning to teach any subject presents a range of opportunities and challenges. Many of

these will be fairly universal; however, each curriculum area will contain a unique set of issues

and citizenship education is no exception. This chapter sets out to answer three sequential

questions as you begin the teaching of citizenship education. First, what context will greet

you as you begin teaching the subject in schools? Second, what fundamental preparatory

steps can you take now to ready you to become an effective citizenship teacher? Lastly, how

can you begin to build positive, productive relationships with students in your citizenship

lessons so all are able to learn?
